Make sure you know your CPT and HCPC terminology. Make sure you are familiar with Gov’t regulations and restrictions for Medicare and Medicaid with regards to what you can/can’t code with. For Billing, make sure you are familiar with both UB04 and HCFA 1500 forms, as well as any type of appeal/dispute forms. It would be helpful for you to have a list ready of the different payers you have experience with. If you have knowledge of contracts, make sure you say you know how to read and understand contract verbiage.

Your interviewer will be the one asking the majority of th questions. Billing and Coding is different areas in some places, i.e. hospitals, in that Coders Code, Billers Bill. Make sure you ask if they are two different job functions if you are applying with a doctor’s office/clinic. If you have any doubts about what your expected responsibilities are, ask. You should avoid asking about salary. Most interviewers are turned off by that question.

    Good luck!
