I’m getting ready to go back to college because I’ve already done some generals, but now I’m trying to figure out what I actually want to get a degree/diploma/certificate in. I’m interested in the Medical Billing and Coding Specialst program but I’m just wondering if anyone has gone for that and what the job is like and if you had any luck actually finding a job for that? Thanks!

I got my A.S. degree in “Health Information Management”.
To do medical billing, you can go to pretty much any college and probably get a job anywhere. To do medical coding, you can’t just go to any school and get a job anywhere nowadays. Although some places will hire you, many places now have guidelines that you must be certified as an RHIT through AHIMA (unless you already have experience or a CCS). To be certified, you have to go to an accredited school that makes you eligible to sit for the RHIT exam. Most schools that offer medical billing/coding are NOT accredited so don’t expect to get your degree and be an RHIT unless you do the research and make sure you’ll be eligible.

I do coding, and I love it. I find it interesting to read through the charts and find the diagnoses and what the codes are. You have to be an investigative type of person to like it I guess. It seems to be pretty easy to find a job in coding. I see them listed a LOT. Of course many places want you to have experience, but not all places can get that lucky. :)

Check out the website listed below for more information on RHIT credentials, which schools are accredited, and AHIMA in general.
