I think the lack of transparency and the confusion in the billing have evolved to maximize hospital and insurance company revenue. There has to be some perverse reason for the lack of transparency (the insurance company and hospital do not tell you what their transfer price); and you get multiple bills from multiple parties instead of just one bill. Maybe the? reason for charging the uninsured more is a shell game to maximize tax deductions.

I think your last statement is spot on! They don’t expect the uninsured to pay, and it allows them to charge those invoices to “Bad Debt Expense” thereby? reducing the tax paid on actual earnings. Good comment, sir.
